Liu Mingyan reached out and took the hand of her husband's other wife. Ning Yingying squeezed back. The air around them was acrid with ashes and death. From one peak to the next, Cang Qiong Mountain was on fire.

"This was what needed to happen," Yingying asked in a voice that did not quiver, "wasn't it?"

"They killed my brother," Mingyan replied. She didn't add, And your master tried to rape you, because nobody needed to be reminded of that.

"I know. It's just..."

It was a lot of lives just like theirs, ended in fire because Luo Binghe did not mind collateral damage. Their husband, who was always kind to them, when they saw him. Who didn't mind what they got up to, didn't lock them up in the inner palace like he could have. Who let them love one another.
